Brand guide

Our name. Our owl.

How to write the name, place the owl and use the emblem.

HootBook's code opens at the public release, under an open-source license. Its names and its artwork are not part of that license. Here are the few rules for using them, and what a fork must change.

Rules for forks
HootBook

Write it HootBook

One word, with a capital H and a capital B.

HootBook
The app, for a Mac, a Windows PC and Android.
栞
HootBook's name in Japanese and Chinese. It means a bookmark.
KUON.ai
The company that makes HootBook, and its website.
KUON
Short for KUON.ai. Where HootBook could be confused with another project, “HootBook by KUON” makes it clear.

In the app, the AI in the note is called Frontier, and the command-line tool is hootbook, all lowercase.

The owl and the wordmark

The owl

The KUON owl is HootBook's icon in every form: the app icon, the favicon, its poses and animation, and the owl on these pages. It sits directly on the washi paper, so the paper shows through.

The wordmark

HootBook, set in EB Garamond, beside the owl.

HootBook's emblem: a database drawn in ink, struck through with a burgundy pencil slash.

The emblem

The crossed-out database

No server of ours, so no database of your notes.

A database in ink, struck through in burgundy pencil, over its label: our database, crossed out, then there isn't one.

  • Ink on washi. The database is drawn in ink, on the paper.
  • The slash is burgundy.Always, wherever the emblem appears.
  • Use it as drawn.Never redraw it, and never remove the slash.

It pairs with the line

Your notebook. Not our database.

Ink, burgundy, washi

If you fork the code

KUON.ai reserves all rights in HootBook's names and artwork, listed here, including trademark rights.

A fork must

  • Use its own name and its own icon, and none of the names or artwork listed below.
  • Replace HootBook's brand files before it distributes a build.
  • Use its own app identifier in place of HootBook's, which names KUON.ai as the publisher.

You may

  • Say where it came from: “based on HootBook by KUON.ai” is fine.
  • Name HootBook in an article, a review, a talk or a list of apps, or to say your project works with it.

Please don't

  • Suggest that KUON.ai made, endorses or supports your work.
  • Use the owl or KUON.ai's 久 seal to refer to the project.

The names and artwork

Not sure? Ask.

There are no brand downloads yet. If you need the artwork, or aren't sure a use is fine, ask at oss@kuon.ai before you publish.
