Technical reference 01 · Frontier conversations

The Hoot Page

One request. Room to think it through.

A Hoot Page is the conversation area attached to one // request in a note. Answer Frontier’s questions, ask for changes, and decide what belongs in your note—all in the same place.

Reviewed · Written requests on Mac and Windows

01 / Begin

Start with one request

Frontier is HootBook’s AI assistant. Choose a supported AI service, called a provider, in Settings, then start a line in your note with //, followed by what you want help with. Press Return to send the request. You can keep writing while Frontier works.

The response appears beneath that request. This is your Hoot Page. Use Reply to Frontier to answer a question or request a change, then press Return or choose Continue. Each reply continues the same task. A new // line starts a separate request.

The note holds your writing. The Hoot Page holds the conversation while you work on the result.

02 / Develop the answer

A question, a reply, a revision

Frontier may need a missing detail before it can finish. Answer in the reply field on the Hoot Page. You do not have to repeat the original request or put the answer on another line in your note.

One Hoot Page · an illustrative exchangeShown in order to explain the flow; the app displays the latest response.
  1. You · original request

// Turn these notes into a project update.

  2. Frontier · a question

Who will read the update, and what matters most to them?

Reply is available. Include is unavailable while a question remains unresolved.

  3. You · clarification

The leadership team. Focus on delivery risks and the staffing decision.

  4. Frontier · first draft

The project is on schedule. Testing remains the main delivery risk. Leadership needs to decide whether to add a second tester.

  5. You · revision

Make it two sentences. Keep the staffing decision explicit.

  6. Frontier · revised result

The project is on schedule, with testing the main delivery risk. Leadership needs to decide whether to add a second tester.

Choose Include when you are ready to put this result in the note.

The latest response replaces the previous response in the Hoot Page. The original task and your decisions still guide the next turn. This does not mean the app displays a permanent transcript of every exchange.

03 / Keep the meaning

What Frontier receives

When you send a new reply, HootBook supplies the full current note, provided it is not sealed. If you edit the note between replies, the next reply uses the updated text. It also supplies the original request, your earlier replies and decisions, relevant earlier responses, edited plan steps, and results the app has observed from actions.

A text selection tells Frontier what to focus on. Text immediately before and after the request provides another clue. Both help identify what is relevant; the full note is still supplied.

This shares the open note with your chosen provider. It does not search the rest of your journal. Sealed notes are kept out of AI requests. Your provider’s terms govern what it keeps.

How much conversation can it carry?

There are limits on conversation length and the amount sent to a provider. Older completed answers may be shortened. Your original request, decisions and current note must fit; HootBook stops with an explanation when supported limits are exceeded.

These limits make a Hoot Page a place to work through a task, rather than an unlimited record of a conversation.

04 / Keep what you want

Put the result in your note

By default, responses wait for you. A clarification question or a response with unresolved questions has no Include option. When the result is ready, Include replaces the original // line with the latest result and any sources that belong with it. It does not paste the clarification and revision exchange into your note.

Continue
Sends your reply to the same conversation. It does not insert the response into your note.
Include
Keeps the finished result in the note, in place of the original request.
Copy
Copies the response as Markdown. Your note stays as it is.
Dismiss
Removes the response and its request line. Undo can bring them back.

An optional setting, Frontier writes straight to the page, can insert eligible initial prose and long answers automatically. It is off by default. Clarifications and follow-up results always wait for your choice to Include.

05 / Know what happened

A proposal comes before an action

A response can suggest steps involving another app. The displayed result needs to describe what actually happened: saving a draft, opening a message window and sending a message are different outcomes.

HootBook uses results reported by the connected app or service to track those outcomes. A sentence from the model saying “done” is not proof that an action succeeded. Include keeps text; it does not send a message or create a calendar event.

Calendar changes use their own review and Create or Save controls. If a calendar write has an uncertain result, use its result check to find out what happened before trying the action again.

06 / Pick it up again

Cancel, retry and return

Cancel a follow-up
The previous response and your unsent reply return. A late response from the canceled request cannot replace a newer one.
Try again after a failure
Retries the failed reply with the note text and conversation context from that attempt. Once the response returns, a new reply uses your latest note edits.
Switch notes
Completed responses, edited plan fields and reply drafts can return during the current session. Leaving a note stops requests still running. Keep the original request line if you want to return to its Hoot Page.

Hoot Pages stay available during the current session. They are not a permanent chat archive and do not sync as conversations between devices. Use Include to keep a finished result as part of the note.
